HOW TO CHOSE AN AUTOCLAVE:

There are three main types of dental autoclaves: Class N, Class B, and Class S.

  • Class N autoclaves are the smallest and simplest type of dental autoclave. They are only suitable for sterilizing simple materials, such as scalpels. They cannot be used to sterilize textiles, porous loads, hollow items, or items in pouches.
  • Class B autoclaves are the most common type of dental autoclave. They are capable of sterilizing a wide range of materials, including textiles, porous loads, hollow items, and items in pouches. Class B autoclaves are the most recommended type of autoclave for dental practices.
  • Class S autoclaves are the most powerful type of dental autoclave. They are used in hospitals and other settings where there is a high risk of infection. Class S autoclaves are not commonly used in dental practices.

In addition to the type of autoclave, there are a number of other factors to consider when choosing an autoclave for a dental practice, such as the capacity of the autoclave, the type of cycle, and the price.

Here is a table summarizing the key differences between the three types of dental autoclaves:

Feature Class N Class B Class S
Size Smallest Medium Largest
Capacity Low Medium High
Cycle Gravity displacement Prevacuum Prevacuum
Materials Simple Wide range Wide range
Price Low Medium High

A Class B autoclave is the best type of dental autoclave for dental handpieces. Class B autoclaves use a prevacuum cycle, which helps to ensure that all air is removed from the chamber before the sterilization process begins. This helps to prevent the formation of steam pockets, which can prevent the instruments from being properly sterilized.

Class B autoclaves are also capable of reaching higher temperatures and pressures than Class N autoclaves. This is important for sterilizing dental handpieces, as they can be difficult to sterilize due to their small size and complex design.

In addition, Class B autoclaves are typically larger than Class N autoclaves, which allows you to sterilize more instruments at once. This can save you time and money, as you will not need to sterilize the instruments as often.

However, it is important to note that not all Class B autoclaves are created equal. Some models may have shorter cycle times, which can be beneficial if you are short on time. Others may have features such as an integrated drying pump, which can help to reduce the amount of time it takes to dry the instruments after sterilization.

When choosing a Class B autoclave for dental handpieces, it is important to consider the size of your practice, the number of instruments you need to sterilize, and your budget. With so many different models available, you are sure to find one that meets your needs.
